Physical Education

In PE we aim to provide a broad and balanced curriculum that caters for all students and educates them physically, morally, socially and cognitively.

  • All students in Key Stage 3 and 4 have one double lesson of PE per week.
  • Year 7 and 8 alternate between Indoor and Outdoor activities each week.
  • Key Stage 3 students are taught in single gender groups in either a setted or mixed ability (single gender) group, depending on their year group, ability, attainment and effort.

Year 9

Year 9 students study a 'bridging' - Key Satge 3 to 4 transition curriculum that aims to allow for more informed choices during the Key Stage 4 options process and prepare them more effectively for PE and Sport examination and core courses in Year 10. In Year 9 all students study a carousel of the 5 units shown below:

  • During the KS4 Core Curriculum a flexible and student centred options system is utilised, in order to promote maximum participation and achievement.
  • Students are able to choose their preferred 'Learning Pathway' from the areas of 'Team Games',' Fitness & Health', Individual Pursuits' or 'Leadership & Coaching'.
  • All students are encouraged to gain National Governing Body Leadership / Coaching Awards. A very popular Level 1 Sports Leaders Award is offered, with students assisting in the planning and implementation of departmental and local authority / community sporting events.
  • All students are given the opportunity to use specialist off-site facilities (when and where available) such as local fitness suites, golf driving ranges, climbing walls, in order to enhance their levels of enjoyment, progress and achievement.

GCSE

An increasingly large number of students choose to study one of two examination courses offered:

GCSE PE: This is a very successful course in which students achieve consistently fantastic results (2015 = 88% A*-C, 2016 = 88% A*-C)

  • Course Content: 40% Practical (3 assessed activities, one team game, one individual and 1 choice of either plus Analysis of Performance in 1 chosen activity), 60% Theory.
BTEC Sport: An increasingly popular course that aims to further the link between theoretical and practical sport. Assessment is 25% external exam and 75% assignment based. This suits learners who work consistently hard and are looking towards further BTEC study or sports related employment post 16.

BTEC Sport

We also run successful BTEC Sport courses. More info can be found on the College Website

Extra Curricular

We operate a wide ranging extra-curricular programme that caters for those students wishing to join school teams and compete in inter-school competitions, as well as those who seek more recreational aspects of PE and sport.

We have very successful school teams in Rugby, Netball, Football, Basketball, Rounders, Cricket and Athletics and many students gain county, regional and national recognition. We also provide recreational badminton, fitness and dance clubs. All students are encouraged to participate in aspects of out of hours sporting activity.
