Educate Awards 2015
Last week we attended the annual Educate Awards evening which was held at Liverpool Cathedral. This was the 3rd year in a row the department had been shortlisted for the 'Outstanding Commitment to School Sport in a Secondary School' with us bidding for the hat - trick of wins.

It has been a fantastic achievement over the last 3 years to be the winners in 2013, 2014 and to be runners up in 2015 in such a tough category. School sport is growing from strength to strength each year with more of our pupil’s successfully representing the school across a wide range of sports in extra-curricular and our sports leaders excelling in the community with our feeder primary schools.

Ashley is currently side-lined with a knee injury but we wish her a speedy recovery & all the best for her future football career, we’ll definitely be keeping watch.

Tim joined Latics as a 10-year-old and progressed through the youth ranks into the Under 18s and Development Squad, winning the Michael Millett Youth Team Player of the Year award and captaining both sides along the way.
Chow worked hard in the Development Squad, but had to bide his time for a first team chance, making his debut as a second half substitute against Millwall in April 2015.
Initially told he would be free to leave the club at the end of the 2014/15 season, newly appointed manager Gary Caldwell added the St. Helens based midfielder to his first team squad and subsequently handed him his first senior start and home debut against Brighton & Hove Albion on 18 April.
Chow made it a debut to remember, scoring inside the 26th minute during Latics' 2-1 victory.

Year 7 Rugby v St. Augustines
Rainford 32 - 20 St.Augustines
Written by Sebastian Boardman & Harry Thomas
Playing St. Augustines was no walk in the park but was an enormous improvement from our last game against Cowley. Rainford started well with a tough tackling set which forced St.Augustines into an error, giving us good field position to score our first try through Matthew Wood. We continued to build pressure through great defence & attacking rugby which lead to our second try from Tom Mitchell which give us a good lead going into half time. During the second half further tries from Paddy Edmondson,Tom Mitchell & Matthew Wood kept the tie in our balance. With the clock ticking and St.Augustines coming back with some good tries we lead with only a few minutes remaining by 6 points before Tom Mitchell scored a spectacular try and his 3rd of the night giving us the breathing space and making us winners 32 - 20.
Tries - Tom Mitchell 3, Matthew Wood, Paddy Edmondson & Issac Backhouse

Congratulations to the U13s Girls football team as they beat Calderstones from Liverpool to reach the Semi-final of the Merseyside Cup.
The girls pictured above played on Monday night at Rainford Rangers and the game finished 0 - 0 after Rainford missing a penalty in the dying minutes to win the game in normal time. The game went into extra time and needed penalties to decide the game as nothing else could separate the teams.

We would like to thank Warren & North West Waste Consultants who have sponsored the new kit which will be used by the Year 7 & 8 boy’s teams and will be worn in the girls final. We would also like to thank Rainford Rangers for the use of their pitch.

The day was supported by Paralympic Cyclist Rick Waddon and involve an inspirational talk from him, a Q&A session, and a focus on inclusive coaching and inclusive competition. The idea is that each ambassador would go back into their own school setting or local club and coach/inspire 5 youngsters with SEND to take part in sport. Adam will now work alongside the PE department and Learning Support in his task to engage and inspire others to participate in sport, both within school and the local community.
Well done Adam! We look forward to the outcome.

Both teams played really well with one of the girls teams winning 4, drawing 1 and losing 1 making them runners up of the tournament. All the girl's enjoyed the day out and got to meet some of Wigan Athletics current squad throughout the day as they were refereeing the games and also mingling in with the teams who were off at the time. The girls will now progress onto the next phase of the football league tournament, where eventually they could be representing the school in the national tournament at Wembley.
Sports Round Up
Sports Round up 14.11.13
Both Year 7 & 10 travelled down to Cowley (doesn't that sound familar, to Cowley) to play their round of their St. Helens Cup. Year 7 got beat 30 - 10 although Mr Skerry said that if they had played like they did in the second half for the full game the score would of probably been reversed. Special mentions go to Rainford's flyer Ben Hutchinson for scoring to 50m length of the field tries. The first one practically all Cowley's team chased him home but no one could get near, the second time they didn't bother because they knew it would be the same result again.
Year 10 played in a juggernaut of a game as it was pretty much level pegging for practically all the game. Cowley, who the vast majority of their players play scholarship rugby were odds on favourites but it was Rainford who took the game by the scruff of the neck and were first to score. Both teams exchanged tries for majority of the game when bad light at 12 - 12 seemed to effect a decision made by the referee which swung the advantage to Cowley. The lads continued to battle on and scored the last try of the game out wide in which the best piece of skill was saved by Jack Moss. With our goal kicking injured and no one else putting their hand forward Jack Moss picked the ball up took two steps back and kicked it off the touchline to land the perfect conversation. Special mentions go out to Alex Eckley, Jack Moss in the pack for their all round play and the creative halves in Cameron Brown, Adam Gannon & Jacob Cummings for their attacking play. Final Score 25 - 18 to Cowley.
Our U13s Girls Rugby Union team went to West Park rugby club to play in their contact festival were they came up across a mixture of St. Helens schools and others from afar. The Girl's were fantastic throughout the tournament winning all their games which set them up with a local derby v De La Salle. The girls were unlucky to lose their final by 1 try but still qualify for the next stage of the tournaments. There were plenty of positives as Miss Kinsella said that some girls had been identified by the England staff as stand out performers and want to get them down to rugby clubs. Special mentions go out to Chloe Fairclough, Lauren Binns, Lauren Prescott & Clodagh Jordan. Well done girls!!!
KS3 girls badminton went to Greenbank school to play a series of friendly matches before their major tournaments start. Our girl's were fantastic on the night and the vast majority ended up playing girl's older than them and still won convincingly. Well Done to Leanne Carey, Megan Lang, Becky Duffy, Caitlin Scott, Rachel Parker & Sam Griffiths.
Our Year 9 Basketball team went to Sutton to compete in their St. Helens Central venue tournament but unfortunately didn’t qualify winning just the 1 game. Things didn't get better for the Year 9s and Mr.Skerry as the minibus wouldn't start and had to be rescued by Mr Halliwell.
Sports Round Up
Sports Round Up 8.11.13
It's been an action packed week so far on the sporting front at Rainford as teams from different years have been out and represented the school in all different sports.
The year 8 lads bounced back from their hammering at St.Peter's & Pauls of Widnes in their champion schools competition to beat Cowley 26 - 6 in their first St.Helens Cup match. Special mentions go out to Josh Simm, Marcus Newton & Sam Lawlor for their efforts in the game. Year 11 boys were unlucky in their first St.Helens Cup encounter against Cowley losing out in the closing minutes with a last gasp try from Cowley 18 - 10. The Year 11's were a credit to the school with everybody showing their hand in difficult playing conditions and deserve all their plaudits that come their way.
Year 7 boys football went to Hope Academy to play the annual 7 a side St. Helens Competition. The year 7 boys ended up winning the competition by needing a win in the last game of the tournament against St. Augustines and they produced that win with a screamer from Tom Preston to hand the trophy to the lads. Special mentions go to the back 3 who only leaked two goals all tournament. Congratulations to Ben Hutchinson, Tom Preston, Ethan Kinnon, Daniel Williams, Ethan Hatton, Danny Foster, Ethan Gaskell, Daniel White and Thomas Frodsham.
Our Year 8 Girls Netball team went to Sutton to compete in their St. Helens Central Venue and won their games against Rainhill 6 - 0 & De La Salle 5 - 1. Special mentions go to all the team who shown a quick, expansive attacking game that tore the two teams to pieces. Congratulations to Emily Cunliffe, Louise & Charlotte Cherry, Saffron Arnold, Lauren Marshall, Mattea J, Rebecca Marsh & Rachel Parker.
U14's Girls football team went to Kirby Sports College in their Merseyside Cup match and produced a fantastic performance to win 3 - 0. Rainford's goals came from Chloe Fairclough 2 and Jade Sparrow 1 in a good all round team performance from the girls. Special mentions from the coach go to Ellie Shephard in year 7 who played up and was her debut.
Year 8 & 11 Rugby v Cowley
Both year 8 & 11 boys went down to Cowley to play their firsts games in the St.Helens Schools Tournament. Both teams played some outstanding rugby despite the harsh weather conditions.
The year 8 lads bounced back from their hammering at St.Peters & Pauls of widnes in the champion schools to win 26 - 6 and the year 11 boys got edged out in the final minutes of their contest losing 18 - 10.
Both teams were a credit to the school and look forward to their next matches in the competition.

It has been a fantastic Year of Sport with many young people achieving national honours for representing their country, region, town and school. It has been an amazing year in 2012-2013 where Rainford High has certainly built on the Olympic legacy.
