EnglishIn Term 1, Year 7 will work on a ‘Time Travellers’ and ‘Horror’ unit of learning. They will be given the opportunity to explore a variety of fiction including pre twentieth century as well as contemporary texts. They will develop their own creative writing skills and explore how language and punctuation choices can be used for effect.In Term 2, Year 7 will study a novel and Shakespeare unit of learning. They will explore the concept of characters and themes within a text. Students will be taught how to cite from a text using the PEE model with particular emphasis on extending explanations. They will also be taught how to structure and link paragraphs effectively when responding to a text.In Term 3, Year 7 will study short stories and a ‘Heroes and Villains’ unit of learning. They will explore how texts are structured and experiment with their own writing. Students will develop their own narrative and descriptive writing using the texts they have studied as a stimulus. They will be taught how to read between the lines and interpret information from a text.

GeographyOur Changing Climate
An introduction to KS3 and examining various weather features as well as looking at our changing climate and the impacts on people. A lesson will be spent collecting primary data, using basic fieldwork equipment, on microclimate variations around the school site.
Essential Map Skills
Developing the skills to read and use a variety of maps, i.e. grid references, measuring distance and understanding how height and relief is represented. Students will also have the opportunity to use maps beyond the classroom in order to put into practice the skills developed earlier in the topic.
Where do we live & why?
Studying general development of settlements, their shape and function as well as looking at local settlements.

The Coastal Zone.
Looking at the natural processes which occur along the coastline as well as human issues such as the impact of coastal erosion.
HistoryAn introduction to History.
This unit will give students an introduction to the study of History. It will also give them the opportunity to become familiar with primary and secondary sources and the historical concepts which they will use throughout the Key stage 3 course.
This unit will cover the impact of the Romans and students will have the opportunity for some local history by a study of Chester. They will complete several pieces of extended writing based on historical interpretation.Students will study Medieval Britain and the major events of the period such as the Norman Conquest and the Black Death.
Religious EducationStudents will explore ideas focusing on The Concept of God including how he is a spirit and a Power.Students will investigate the varying Creation stories and explore how credible they areStudents will explore the religion of Judaism focusing on Beliefs and Practises including Kosher Food.
TechnologyIn year 7 students follow a double lesson carousel of Food; Textiles; Electronics and Resistant Materials throughout the year as well as a single lesson per week of Graphics.
In these lessons they will study the design cycle of “Design – Make – Evaluate” in each of the specific materials/media.
Computer SciencePupils research the history of ICT and produce an animation using Scratch software to tell the storyPupils produce an ICT solution for a fictitious pet centre. Solution includes developing spreadsheet, database and websitePupils develop animated banners for a website using the Flash software
ArtStudents will explore the theme of Adornment and EmbellishmentStudents will explore the theme of SelfStudents will explore the theme of Environment
Music1. My Music
An introduction to music at Rainford High and a baseline assessment of students’ prior experiences and skills.
All students are encouraged to sing, perform on keyboards and explore beat and rhythm activities

2. Graphic Scores
Students learn how to follow graphic notation and create their own compositions using both voices and instruments
1. China
Students learn about the music of China and perform and compose in this style.
Links are made to Chinese New Year and students explore the link between music, dance and Chinese culture

2. Notation/Rhythm
An introduction to/development of reading and playing from conventional rhythm notation.
Students work in groups and learn about developing structures (unison, canon, polyrhythms)

An introduction to/development of reading, playing and singing from conventional pitch notation.
Students perform from notation melodically and using chords if appropriate.

2. Ensemble/structure
Whole class ensemble performance using a variety of instruments and voices
Students explore musical structures.

Physical EducationOur Physical Education Curriculum aims to ensure that all pupils:

During this term, students will participate in 4 activities from two carousels. Students will be informed what their starting activity will be on each carousel:

Health Related Fitness, Dance, Gymnastics, Volleyball
Year 7 Girls Outdoor Carousel:
Netball, Football, Tag Rugby, Option

Year 7 Boy’s Indoor Carousel:
Health Related Fitness, Basketball, Gymnastics, Volleyball
Year 7 Boys Outdoor Carousel: Football, Rugby League, Football, Rugby Union.

Students will be assessed on:

1) How they select and combine skills
2) What they know about strategies, tactics and composition.
3) How well they can plan and lead practices and take on different leadership roles
4) How accurately they analyse and comment on their own and others work.
5) What they know about health and fitness and how regular physical activity can benefit their health.
During this term, students will continue to follow the two carousels and will participate and develop their knowledge and skills in the two remaining activities.

In the summer term students follow an Athletics Carousel (Running, Jumping, Throwing) and a summer games carousel.

Learn to LearnFor the first half term students will consider themselves as individuals, as members of their House and as learners at Rainford High.

During the second half term the students will consider their own futures, setting long term goals and considering obstacles and how they will be able to overcome them.

Throughout the term there will be a focus on developing the following skills;

Independence, Collaboration, Creativity, Communication (Literacy and Oracy) and a Growth mindset.
For the first half of the term the students will explore how their brain functions and consider how knowledge of the brain can help them in their learning at home and at school.

During the second half term they will experience the planning and management of a simple enterprise.

Throughout the term there will be a continuing focus on developing the following skills;

Independence, Collaboration, Creativity, Communication (Literacy and Oracy) and a Growth mindset.
Students will explore and experience the customs, cultures, languages and foods of other countries. This will be themed around the countries participating in the Women’s Football World Cup.
