Many Congratulations to the Year 9 Netball team who have been crowned Merseyside County Netball Champions!!!
Having already been victorious this year at the St Helens Netball Tournament and St Helens Central Venue competition, the team were then successful at the Liverpool County Preliminary round in early February to qualify for the County finals. On Saturday 2nd March, the team traveled to Wirral Girls Grammar School to compete in the Finals.
Throughout the tournament the team remained unbeaten playing against teams from St Mary’s, West Kirby, Greenbank, Birkenhead and Wirral Grammar School for Girls. (won 4 drew 1). Subsequently, they finished in first place and awarded the title County Champions!
The team played superbly throughout the tournament, maintaining an impressive standard of netball against some extremely competitive and talented teams. Formidable shooting and resolute defending by the Rainford players combined with the attacking flair of the mid court proved too strong for the opposing teams. In their penultimate game, a fiercely fought battle between Rainford and the previous longstanding holders of the County title resulted in Rainford winning by 2 goals. At this point, the girls began to believe that this could be their day and went on to win their final game.
In addition to jubilantly lifting the trophy, the players received compliments from opposing teams and umpires regarding not only their style of play but their demonstration of FairPlay and Sportsmanship.
The team have been committed to training and playing in matches since Year 7 and have worked hard to improve. It has been a pleasure to work with them on a weekly basis and help them develop as individual netball players and as an effective team.
Thank you to Miss Daniels for assisting with the tournament arrangements, accompanying the girls to the preliminary round and for supporting the team at the final on Saturday. Furthermore, thank you to the parents who assisted with transport and cheered the girls onto victory!
The team have truly done themselves, the PE Department and Rainford High proud.
A fantastic and unforgettable team achievement, well done!!
