– KS3 PE

Curriculum

Intent:

Physical Education at Rainford High aims to make PE ‘Powerful Education’ by holistically developing ‘the whole-child’; educating students physically, morally, socially, culturally and cognitively.

  • Providing leading – edge learning experiences within the field of Physical Education.
  • Improving levels of physical literacy, fitness, health, mental and personal well-being of all students.
  • Developing tomorrow’s ‘Future Leaders’ – allowing all students to develop essential life skills that will allow them to make a significant contribution to whole-school improvement and British / Global society.
  • Developing a life-long love of Sport and Physical Activity for students of all abilities.

Implementation:

The 7-year Physical Education journey at Rainford High begins with a broad, balanced, challenging, inclusive and ‘student-centric’ KS3 Curriculum which allows maximum opportunity for all students to develop a wide range of physical, social, mental and leadership skills, and to apply them with positive effect in competitive situations, enjoy participating in physical activity and experience a sense of enjoyment and success.

The implementation of an innovative KS4 Core ‘activity option choice’ – combined with the provision of a broad range of academic and vocational PE / Sport examination courses within KS4/5 – will allow all students a clear progression pathway between KS3-5 and prepare them effectively for Post-18 choices.

An extensive and award winning Extra-Curricular Sports Programme allows students of all abilities to extend their skills, improve levels of Health & Fitness and experience personal and team success – at local, regional and national levels – within a broad range of recreational and competitive activities.

The Department has a clear ethos of ‘Working Together For Excellence’ which emphasises the shared values of hard-work and collaboration as the key to achieving educational excellence within Physical Education, School Sport and Physical Activity.

Impact:

We want to ensure that students of all abilities make outstanding progress relative to their starting points and attain their ‘personal excellence’ within external KS4/5 examination courses, the KS3/4 Core Curriculum and within extensive intra and inter-school sporting events.

However, whilst academic qualifications, healthy lifestyles and sporting participation/performance are of course extremely important, the true impact of High Quality Physical Education and School Sport at Rainford High should be seen in how we have utilised the power of PE & Sport to equip all students with the essential life skills that make them employable within a global economy and will allow them to make a significant contribution to British and Global society; leadership skills, teamwork, developing positive relationships, adaptability, resilience, initiative, self-confidence, self-belief, organisation, effective communication skills and a determination to succeed – the list is endless!

Once our Alumni students have embarked on University or Apprenticeship courses we want them to realise that they have gained a ‘head start’ in comparison to their peers and look back with great pride on their PE & Sporting experiences at Rainford High.

The PE department has recently been awarded the Association for Physical Education’s ‘Quality Mark – with Distinction, in recognition of Outstanding provision for PE, Sport and Physical Activity as well as being four times Winners of Educate’s ‘Outstanding Commitment to Sport in a Secondary School Award’ (2018, 2017, 2014, 2013).

Possible careers and opportunities – Physical Education lends itself to a range of careers in sports and fitness as well as other industries. Possible careers include: Sports science, PE teacher, Physiotherapist, Professional sportsperson, Sports coach/consultant, Sports policy at local and national level, Diet and fitness instructor, Personal trainer, Nutritionist, Media – sports journalist, Fashion Design – sports clothing, Police and the Forces, Psychologist.

Facilities – The PE department’s facilities consist of a Sports Hall, Studio, Astro Pitch, Netball/Tennis courts and a number of grass football and rugby pitches.

The Learning Support link means the majority of KS3 SEND students have regular access to 1 to 1 Teaching Assistants (TA) within their PE lessons.

Extra-Curricular –We operate a wide-ranging extra-curricular programme that caters for those students wishing to join school teams and compete in inter-school competitions, as well as those who seek more recreational aspects of PE and sport. We have very successful school teams in Rugby, Netball, Football, Basketball, Rounders, Cricket and Athletics and many students gain county, regional and national recognition. We also provide recreational badminton, fitness and dance clubs. All students are encouraged to participate in aspects of out of hours sporting activity.
